Poole's Blooming Success

Poole has once again achieved success in the South and South East England in Bloom Competition, gaining a very respectable Silver Award in the Population Category. The overall winner in this category was Fareham with a ‘Silver Gilt’ Award.

The judges were very impressed with the high standard of flora and bedding displays throughout the town. They also made particular reference to the close working partnerships that Leisure Services has with community and voluntary groups within the Borough.

Among the areas Judges were most impressed with were:

  • The imaginative and colourful displays in Poole Park
  • The policy of the Council encouraging business and commerce to purchase containers or hanging baskets, particularly evident in Broadstone. \n
  • The overall quality of the grass cutting on the roundabouts and verges. \n
  • The high standard of maintenance and the huge range of trees and perennials at Upton Park. Leisure Services encouraging the community in the organisation of bulb and wild flower planting. \n
  • The imaginative use of seafaring artifacts at Holes Bay Roundabout. \n
  • Victoria School and Chestnut Nursery supplying the bedding plants for the displays in the town. \n
  • The overall lack of litter, dog fouling, fly posting and graffiti within the Borough.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: “This silver award is an excellent achievement and a reflection on how others view our town.  It clearly demonstrates the high standard of service delivery on the part of Leisure Services and indeed the Council as a whole in achieving its mission of Striving for Excellence.”
