Pride of Place Awards 2002 and 2003

The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Ray Smith, presented Poole Pride of Place awards for 2002 & 2003 in a ceremony at the Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on Monday 24 November 2003.

On behalf of the judges, Councillor Mrs Stribley said: "It is always difficult to pick out one or two from a field of such quality, but we were always mindful of the fact that buildings receiving this award act as an indicator of the sort of quality in architecture and landscaping that the Council expects to see in all development."

The Adam Practice Surgery, Longfleet Road, the Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts and the Branksome Beach Café have each been selected for award from 23 entrants for their outstanding design features. In addition, commendations are being presented to Scaplens’ Court Herb and Physic Garden (2002) and 18 Lakeside Road and 1 Alington Road (2003).

Peter Thompson, one of the judges described the Adam Practice as "a cheerful piece of architecture that sits well in the street scene". The Mayor was impressed with its welcoming atmosphere and feeling of calm and comfort on the inside.

The Lighthouse was described by the Mayor as "a major asset for Poole which will be enjoyed by large numbers of our community." As well as its design, the refurbishment of the Lighthouse was praised for its contribution to sustainability. Jon Dowty said: "It re-uses an existing building and retains most of its features and is located close to a well served public transport network."

The second award, in the category of conservation, was made to the Branksome Beach Cafe Bar and Restaurant. Judges were impressed with the refurbishment and extension of the 1930s beach station and the way the contemporary replacement of the Victorian style conservatory was blended in with the retained 1930s building and added to the seaside feel of the buildings.

A commendation was made in 2002 for the restoration of the herb and physic garden at Scaplens’ Court. This was inspired by the work and enthusiasm of Rachel Allenby and Sheila Dutton of the Old Town Conservation Group.

Two commendations were made for 2003, for private houses, in recognition of their high quality in the design and execution of contemporary domestic architecture. These were for the house at Evening Hill, by Richard Horden and 18 Lakeside Road by Phil Easton.
