26 Mar 07Children’s And Young People’s Services Launched
Borough of Poole is launching a new initiative aimed at integrating services for children and young people in the town.
The Mayor of Poole Cllr Mrs Judy Butt will officially launch the Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS) on Tuesday, March 27 at 4pm.
The launch, being held at the new Children’s Centre in Hamworthy, will mark a significant change in the provision of all services to children and young people in Poole, in response to the 2004 Children’s Act
.
The Act, introduced following an inquiry into the torture and subsequent death of Victoria Climbie
, requires local authorities and key partners such as the police, schools and voluntary groups to work together to improve the safety and well-being of children and young people.
Following consultation with parents, carers, children and young people, Borough of Poole published the Children and Young People’s Plan in 2006 which set out priorities to improve opportunities for children and young people.
The plan outlined a need for more local, accessible and integrated services, which will now be co-ordinated from three locations established across the borough, based on school pyramids.
The new locations will cover Alderney (Rossmore), Poole Town/Hamworthy (Carter/Poole High) and Canford Heath/Broadstone (Ashdown/Corfe Hills). Each area will eventually be served by two children’s centres offering access to a range of services and information to parents and carers of children aged under five.
Hamworthy Children’s Centre, the first facility of its kind in Poole, will open to the public later this year. Families using the centre will be able to get advice and support from a range of professionals, enjoy informal play activities and find out how to access other services, such as childcare provision.
Poole CYPS have also adopted a new logo, which was designed by the Children and Young People’s Shadow Board, a group of representatives from each of the youth groups in Poole.
The Mayor will be joined by members of the Shadow Board to acknowledge the contribution they have made to the design and development of the logo and the ongoing support and consultation they provide the Governance Board.
John Nash, Strategic Director for Children's Services, Borough of Poole said: “These are exciting times for those of us working in Children’s Services, as we move towards a greater focus on meeting parents’ and children’s needs at a local level .”
