Work Begins On The Twin Sails Bridge Project

The Borough of Poole has taken its first step to realising the dream of the Twin Sails Bridge since the Government made the Transport Works Act (TWA) Order in principle earlier this month by agreeing to undertake some of the construction work which is necessary before bridge building can begin.

Currently there is access to the Backwater channel for tenders and dinghies off Wilkins Way. However as Wilkins Way will form the landing site for the Twin Sails Bridge these boat launching facilities, much valued by locals, will be lost.

As a result plans have been prepared to provide enhancements to the layout of Slip Way. Improvements will include new dinghy storage facilities and various highway works. The green light for these improvements was given by the Council’s Regeneration Board at a meeting on Wednesday 30 August.  Work will start on site in early Spring 2007 with the detailed designs getting underway this Autumn.

Councillor Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council said: “At last we can take a real step towards delivering the Twin Sails Bridge since we were given the green light by the Government.  The proposed plans for the Slip Way have been formed in response to some of the issues raised at the Public Inquiry last year and we have taken the earliest opportunity to deliver these improvements”.
