28 May 04Team up to Clean up
Poole Council is looking for volunteers to support Pride in Poole and take up the challenge to ‘Team up to clean up’ during National Volunteers Week from 1 – 7 June 2004. If you’re tired of litter, fly-tipping, graffiti and neglected pieces of land spoiling the appearance of your neighbourhood, then why not prove just how much you loathe litter and get out on the streets, local parks and recreation grounds and get active cleaning up. Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Porfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "‘Team up to clean up’ is a chance for everyone to put something back into the local environment. During 2003, volunteers removed in excess of 28 tonnes of discarded waste which is an excellent achievement. This year we are hoping to better that and make a real impact on the cleanliness of the borough. I hope that events like this will encourage people to really think about littering so that we will need less of these campaigns in the future." The Borough of Poole will provide groups of volunteers with litter pickers, gloves, plastic sacks, skips where necessary and arrange for the removal of any waste collected. Kate Langdown, Environmental Enhancement Officer, Consumer Protection, Borough of Poole, said: "Cleaning up Poole needs to involve everyone because each of us, as individuals, have a role to play in caring for our neighbourhoods and respecting the communities in which we live, work and play. It is hoped that voluntary groups, businesses, schools and individuals will support the campaign and pick an area of Poole to help clean up." Any local group or individual interested in planning a clean up or wanting information about other people in the area who may be willing to help, should contact Kate Langdown, Environmental Enhancement Officer, Consumer Protection, Tel: 01202 261 704.
