17 Dec 04New Community Library for Rossmore
The brand new Rossmore Community Library and Learning Centre will be officially opened by Michael Morpurgo (Children's Laureate) on 7 January 2005. The launch will include a range of events and activities throughout the day. Offering library services to the public and the secondary school as well as adult learning courses and a range of community uses, the centre will combine the traditional values of a public library service with a modern imaginative approach. The centre will play a major role in promoting reading, improving literacy and providing learning opportunities for all ages as well as provide valuable community space and free access to computers and information technology. Outreach services will also play an important part with a Community Learning Officer working to engage people who would not normally use a library. The facility will be open to the public for 60 hours per week, Monday to Saturday. It offers a comprehensive library service, a dedicated children's library, an internet café, 20 public computers offering free internet access and a brand new learning room which can also be used as a community meeting room. Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Learning, Borough of Poole, said: "The Rossmore Community Library and Learning Centre is a flagship, with state of the art facilities providing a much needed boost for the learning community. It is a very exciting project that will benefit both pupils at Rossmore Community College and the wider community. The whole project is a fantastic partnership by the Borough of Poole and the College which is designed to support and build a really positive culture of community learning in an area with recognised needs." Kevin McErlane, Head of Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, said: "This is a public facility that can be enjoyed by all. We hope that this new centre will inspire people in the local community to come in and have a coffee, read a book, borrow a video, surf the web or even join a new class. These services can open up a whole world of experience that can be relevant to everyone."
