Licensing in Poole's Parks

Fetes and music festivals in Poole are a popular way for many people to spend their weekends. In order for these types of community events to continue the Borough of Poole’s Leisure Services has now applied for premises licences for all their community parks.

The new licensing laws, which came into effect on Thursday 24 November mean that for the first time all premises - including parks and beaches - need a premises licence in order for events to happen.  To keep bureaucracy to a minimum Leisure Services decided to adopt a blanket approach when applying for the licences.

Clive Smith, Head of Leisure Services, said: “Despite the number of licences applied for it will very much be events as usual as far as events in Poole are concerned.  We have an excellent community events policy in place, which limits the number and type of events that can be held at any of our parks. Having this licence will just make it easier for charities and other organisers when planning their events.”

The new licences will be for the life of the premises and covers activities such as plays, music festivals, fetes, dancing and sporting activities.

Jayne Taylor, Business Manager, Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: “Charity and community groups sometime want to organize events at quite short notice and on a tight budget.  These licences will mean that they will be able to do so without spending time and valuable funds on preparing the appropriate application.”

She added: “The new licences will not, however, cover the provision of alcohol. Licensed bars are not a regular feature of our community events programme and we have a strict policy of not permitting licensed bars at any event which is targeted toward youth.”

Leisure Services has applied for premises licences for a range of parks/open spaces in Poole where events of some form or another take place from time to time. In total 20 public entertainment licences have been applied for around the Borough. No applications have been made for alcohol licences at any of these sites.
