Carers to Benefit from New Courses

Help for people who look after a family member or friend is available to Poole residents in the form of a course especially suited to their needs.

The 12-session course which starts on September 16 is run by Borough of Poole's Adult Social Services. Participants will have the opportunity to meet a range of professionals including benefit advisors, occupational therapists, district nurses and safety and back care advisors. The course is free to carers who live in Poole or look after someone living in Poole.

Val Mitchell, Carers Development Officer, Adult Social Services, Borough of Poole, said: "People who have attended previous courses have found it very helpful as the training is packed with practical information that can help people who are caring at home. Carers will find that they are better equipped to deal with the everyday difficulties that caring can raise. They will also learn what services are available and how to get help if they need it. It is a great opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation."

Sessions on the course include practical care techniques, how to move a patient who needs help with mobility, first aid, carers rights, a guide to benefits, stress management and using the internet to help carers find information related to caring.

Val Mitchell added: "The great thing about this course is the diversity of sessions on offer, participants can attend the whole course or just the sessions that they need. There is a warm friendly environment, there is  no writing, homework or assessment, so it is suitable for people who are new to caring or those who have been caring some time.  It may also be possible for us to help arrange someone to look after the cared for person whilst the care attends."

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Portfolio Holder for Community Support, Borough of Poole, said: "These courses have proved extremely valuable to those who have undertaken them in the past and are always popular. They offer a huge range of expertise and help to anyone who cares for another person."

Course fill up quickly so those interested in attending should apply as soon as possible.  Telephone Val Mitchell 01202 261174 for a course programme and application form.
