Palm Trees Create Sandbanks Tropical Haven

The Borough of Poole's Leisure Services have joined together with residents and businesses in Sandbanks to create a tropical haven along the perimeter of Banks Road. So far they have planted 11 palm trees a result of an initiative by the Sandbanks Association.

Those in the know will recognise the palm trees as Cordyline Australis and several of these plants are already present on the crazy golf course atSandbanks.

Clive Smith, Head of Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: "Palm trees are not native to the UK, so the more hardy Cordylines which look like most people's idea of a palm tree can be used to great effect in planting schemes such as this."

The idea came about to improve the already impressive view across the water towards Poole and the aim is to continue to add to the numbers of palms over the coming years.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "Members of the Sandbanks Association have been involved in various environmental projects at Sandbanks, including the landscaping works on the Midway Path. We are delighted to have worked with them on this latest project, which has added a new element of interest for our residents and visitors."
