Community Alarms for victims of crime

In an initiative between Poole Lifeline Community alarms, Housing and Community Services, Borough of Poole and Dorset Police link will open in new window, a combined Lifeline community alarm and motion detection system is being offered for residents of Poole who have suffered from a recent burglary.

Community Alarm set specially designed for the Elderly and registered disabled

The system consists of two passive infra red motion detectors and a base unit with a panic button and will be available to senior citizens and people who are registered disabled, live at home and have been identified by Dorset Police as someone who would benefit from this cost-effective system.

Monitored by the Borough of Poole’s 24-hour Control Centre, which has direct links to the Police Control room, its purpose will be to give reassurance and support to recent victims of crime and hopefully deter any recurrence.

Councillor Bill Wretham, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "This is an excellent initiative and we are proud to be involved. The benefits that this device will offer to those who may feel nervous at home following an action of crime, is priceless. We hope that it will give elderly and disabled Poole residents the confidence they need to feel safe in their own homes."

Should a motion detector be activated, the operator can listen to what is going on and a recording device is activated in the Control Centre and, by following procedures agreed with Dorset Police, the operator is able to contact the Police Control immediately with full details of what is happening.

This system has been instrumental in the fact that Poole has one of the lowest incidents of Police responding to false alarms in the South which allows the police to direct their resources to the most urgent cases, saving time and money.

John Oakley of Initial hands over the new alarm system to Paul Spencer, Control Room Manager as PC Norry Smith offers his supportPoole Divisions Crime Reduction Officer PC Norry Smith, said: "We have a duty to assist the most vulnerable in our community against those who want to commit crime. This partnership initiative will go some way in allowing those who feel vulnerable to such crime to be more secure in their own homes. "
