Poole's Children Clean up the Beach

Hamworthy beach is a whole lot cleaner thanks to local school children and a team of helpers.

As part of the Pride in Poole campaign, the Borough of Poole teamed up with Turlin Moor Middle School to help clean up the beach as part of a nationwide Marine Conservation Society (MCS) annual beach clean. 130.5kg of rubbish was collected totalling 1241 pieces of litter, including 306 crisp and sweet wrappers.

Councillor Jonathan Pethen, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "It is wonderful to see local children really getting involved in creating a better environment for us all. The work of our Pride in Poole team and of the children brings much needed attention to an ongoing problem of litter. This event builds on the success of the‘Environmental Programmes for Schools pack’ which has been fantastic in enabling children to digitally interact with their environment. By involving the youth of our community we can build towards a greener future and more ecologically aware generations."

Kate Hodder, Consumer Protection Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "The day proved to be a great success. The partnership between the Borough Of Poole and its schools continues to grow and the support and enthusiasm of the local school children was amazing, they all worked so hard to clear the beach of every piece of litter they could see."

Jenny Waldron, Governor of Turlin Moor Middle School, said: "The information collected by the children whilst cleaning the beach helps us explain to the Government the harmful effect litter has on marine life. The Hamworthy beach clean will contribute towards an MCS database of information about litter that will be included in a world-wide database."

The Beach clean took place on 25 September 2003.
