17 Oct 06Residents Asked For Views On Poole Town Centre North
Poole residents are being asked for their views on the Preferred Options concerning the regeneration of the area around the Dolphin Shopping Centre
. Residents’ views can be raised in a consultation period, which will run from the 13th October until 24th November as part of the Town Centre North Area Action Plan.
The Preferred Option sets out how this part of the Town Centre could be transformed to provide a better range of shopping facilities, new housing as well as a redeveloped bus station.
The Area Action Plan has various sub-options including an option to close Kingland Road (the preferred option) or leave it open to traffic. Other options are based around new housing, a pedestrian link between the High Street and Kingland Road area over the rail line and plans for how Sainsbury’s supermarket site could be redeveloped to provide a slightly larger store,
Key objectives for the Area Action Plan are:
· improving the shopping ‘offer’ for Poole Town Centre to create a more diverse mix of new retail
· enhancing residential and leisure uses to improve the vitality of the area
· providing significant improvements to access and movement particularly between the Lighthouse/Bus Station area and the rest of the town centre
· providing quality buildings which are built with sustainable development principles.
Councillor Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for the Economy, said: “Recent retail growth projections and analysis of the town centre suggest that Poole can improve its role and appeal as a major town centre. Although it has a good mix of independent retailers and has a loyal customer base, quality retail stores including department stores are underrepresented. The plan will also seek to improve the area around the Dolphin Centre that is characterised by poor quality public spaces and poor connections to the rest of the town centre. By getting involved in the consultation, Poole people will ensure that their views are considered.”
Bill Richardson, Senior Planning Officer, Strategic Planning Services, said: “The Area Action Plan will have a long term focus of around ten years. It will set a planning framework for the Kingland Road and Pitwines areas which includes the bus station, former NCP car Park and Sainsbury's store & car park. The Council intends that the development will raise Poole's shopping offer and bring improvements such as safer connections between the Lighthouse, bus station and High Street. I hope that as many as people as possible give their views.”
As well as the consultation period planners are holding a walkabout tour of the area on the morning of Friday 3rd November for interested members of the public as well as an exhibition at the Dolphin Centre
between 6th and 12th November.
Following the consultation, the Council will review feedback and prepare an Area Action Plan to be submitted to the Secretary of State for consideration. It is expected that the Area Action Plan will become policy in 2008, although the earliest phasing of works is likely to be 2009, with most redevelopment expected between 2011 and 2013.
