22 Mar 07Poole School Rewarded For Healthy Attitude
Turlin Moor Middle School has been given £100 from Borough of Poole's Transportation Services to spend on books for their school library. The money for the books is a gesture to congratulate the pupils on their participation in a new ‘healthy activity’ scheme.
The government scheme has been initiated to encourage pupils across the country to walk to school on a regular basis and Turlin Moor Middle School will be the first school in the borough to take part.
Alongside the money from Transportation Services, the government’s Department for Transport
will provide further funding to the school to promote the health activity scheme.
The school's promotion will involve a ‘walking passport incentive’ where children will record how many times they walk to school. The pupils will be awarded points on their passport, which can then be redeemed for suitable incentives.
The scheme will not only reduce the number of cars near the school, but will also make sure that more children take some exercise before arriving in the classroom.
Steve Tite, Acting Head of Transportation, said: “This simple idea will show how easy it can be to change the driving habit. The more children walking to school now, the longer they will continue to do it.”
Dr Adrian Dawson, Director of Public Health for Bournemouth & Poole, said: “We fully support this scheme, it gives opportunities for parents and children to be involved in improving their health and I look forward to seeing a successful initiative”.
