The Borough of Poole has launched a programme to help employers recruit and retain people with disabilities. Employers can get help to review their employment practices to see if they are disability-friendly, get assistance in making their recruitment procedures as fair as possible, and discover ways to make adjustments to their workplace so that people with disabilities can be as productive as their non-disabled colleagues.
Philip Mason, Community Services Manager, Adult Social Services, Borough of Poole, believes that disability and employment is becoming a significant issue for local businesses. He said: “Poole’s very low unemployment rate of 1% means that our business sector faces a major challenge in finding the right people to fill job vacancies. Recruiting a qualified candidate with a disability or finding a way to keep an employee who has acquired a disability can be the solution.”
As well as helping businesses to recruit and retain employees with disabilities, the new programme also focuses on increasing awareness in the business community about their legal obligation not to discriminate against employees and job candidates with disabilities.
Mr. Mason added: “It’s important for businesses to take time to think about how the law affects them. We can provide information and guidance about developing fair work practices that benefit everyone.”
Funding assistance for this new programme has been provided by Jobcentre Plus. For more information, call 01202 261140, minicom 01202 261154, e-mail pses@poole.gov.uk or website www.boroughofpoole.com.
