Poole Tackles Abandoned Vehicles in Court

The Borough of Poole's Environmental & Consumer Protection Service has brought a successful prosecution in the fight against abandoned vehicles in the town.

A grey Ford Orion was reported as being abandoned in Alder Crescent. The vehicle had no tax and was in poor condition having no wheels or engine and had been left propped up on bricks.

A subsequent investigation showed the owner of the car to be Mr Julian Bartlett of 149 Haymoor Road Poole. Mr Bartlett did not respond to any of the letters sent to him by officers of E&CPS and legal proceedings were started.

On Friday 6 January 2006 at Bournemouth Magistrates Court, Mr Bartlett was fined £200 and ordered to pay £299 costs for abandoning a vehicle on the highway in contravention of the Refuse Disposal Amenity Act 1978. Mr Bartlett failed to attend court and the case was dealt with in his absence.

Lucy Magill, Team Manager with E&CPS, Borough of Poole, said: "This should send a clear message to members of the public that we take Pride in Poole issues very seriously and we will look to prosecute those people who abandon vehicles on the streets of Poole."

If anyone has suspicions a vehicle may have been abandoned they can contact Environmental & Consumer Protection on 01202 261700 or environment@poole.gov.uk.
