24 Jan 06Launch of Civil Funerals
The Borough of Poole’s Registration Service is launching a new service - Civil Funeral Ceremonies - on February 1 2006, resulting in greater choice for those organising the funeral of a loved one.
Following a directive from the Government, the Registration Service is required to provide new services to support the community around the four key life experiences of Birth, Death, Marriage and Civil Partnership. Poole Registration Service has responded to this by offering an alternative when planning a funeral ceremony.
Christine Stainton, Superintendent Registrar, Legal & Democratic Services, Borough of Poole, said: “At present families are offered a religious denomination ceremony or an Atheist (non-religious) one. The idea behind a Civil Funeral is that it bridges the gap between this.
“Whilst the tribute is a non–religious personal dialogue, it is perfectly acceptable to have a token amount of religious input, for example a favourite hymn, or a reading or prayer. This means that whilst the deceased may not have a particular religious leaning, the family are able to make the final farewell a personal and dedicated occasion.”
Cllr Neil Sorton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Resources, Borough of Poole, said: “The Registration Team are embracing the new services with great enthusiasm, and are really positive about being able to give more choice and greater flexibility to the public now, and in the future.”
