19 May 06Recognising Those Who Care
Poole Social Services is inviting carers to sign up now to one of the many free activities being organised in the area as part of Carers Week
which takes place 12-18th June.
Carers Week
is a national campaign aimed at recognising and celebrating the contribution made by carers and reaching out to hidden carers to ensure they know where support can be found.
As part of this campaign Poole Social Services has linked up with local charities and health trusts to provide several free events throughout the whole week for carers living in Poole. The events will give carers the opportunity to meet others in a similar position, take part in social activities and find information and services available to help them.
Some of the activities organised include a boat trip to Swanage, a day out to Abbotsbury Swannery, individual one to one advice with care experts in the Dolphin Shopping Centre
and an information and consultation lunch event. Young carers are also being taken on a visit to Paultons Park
.
Councillor Elaine Atkinson, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Support said: "Carers Week
is all about giving something back to those people who care for friends or loved ones on an unpaid basis all year round. It's also a great way to show carers that they are not alone and there is a strong support network available to them. We recommend people put their names down for these events as soon as possible so they can get the help and respite they so deserve".
Councillor Ray Smith, Carers Champion at Borough of Poole said: "Carers look after family, partners or friends in need of help because they are ill, frail or have a disability. Though they are unpaid the work of just one carer would cost the economy an average £10,000¹. Through Carers Week
we can help these exceptional people and recognise the contribution they make to their families and society. We thank the staff who have helped bring the activities to life and the people of Poole for their generous donations which make this happen".
Booking forms and more information about the Carers Week events are available from Val Mitchell or Alison Pagram, Adult Social Commission, Borough of Poole on 01202 261174 or 01202 261113 or visit the website at www.boroughofpoole.com.
