Lottery Grant helps Bridge a Generation of Creativity in Poole

Residents and visitors to Poole will be able to experience a unique selection of strange and unusual textile art works at the main stairwell in Poole Central Library throughout September and October 2003.

The project involved Poole’s Youth Services working with the Knowlton and Puddletown Residents Association (KAPRA). Using an instant theatre technique, the youngsters led the group to devise a weird and wonderful story involving stripy pink and green wellington boots, a 50ft yacht and an island of Twonk people. With a wide range of textile techniques, artists, June Heap, Suzanne Carter and Elvis Robertson helped the group to create 28 square foot of colourful images inspired by the story.

The result is the Twonk Island Textile Hangings. Anna Shiels, Arts Development Manager, said: "It sounds like a grisly murder mystery but the Twonk Island Textile Hangings are a lovely collection of fun and vibrant pieces of art created by young and older people."

Peter Cooper, Senior Youth Worker, Borough of Poole, said: "This project was really refreshing! It brought younger and older people together and threw stereotypes out of the window. Each group learnt a lot about the other and we were able to use the knowledge of the participants to guide us through the process."

Councillor Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Learning, said: "It is a real credit to the Borough of Poole to see people so keen to get involved and by working together produce something so creative and original for us all to appreciate. This type of project demonstrates that there isn’t quite such a big age divide after all and that we can all learn things from one another when working together."

The Twonk Island Textile Hangings can be viewed at Poole Central Library stairwell, Dolphin Centre, Poole from 1st September - 31st October 2003.

Notes:

(KAPRA) were granted an ‘Awards for All’ lottery fund of £4,820.00 to invest in an arts project. The elders of the group, supported by The Borough of Poole’sHousing Management Services and the Arts Development Team, invited the younger members from a local youth centre to join in the project.

Note: journalists are invited to a celebration at The Chill Zone, Poole Central Library on Wednesday 3 September from 5.00 - 6.30pm
