A large refurbishment programme of public toilets has started, which will see a new design of facilities in areas of Poole that have attracted anti-social behaviour in the past.
The toilets at Chapel Lane (just off the High Street) are the first to be re built, and demolition has already begun.
The new toilets will have direct access doors to the street and will have improved family and disabled facilities, open 24 hours per day. A small charge has been agreed of ten pence in order to further prevent anti social behaviour, ensure a high level of cleanliness for users and to enable timed locks on the doors to prevent overnight sleeping.
The new Chapel Lane toilets will be followed by new facilities at Quay Visitors Car Park, Sea View and on Poole Road. All of these public toilets have received constant vandalism and misuse recently. The new facilities will eliminate the need for costly repairs and preventative measures against vandalism.
The toilets at Chapel Lane will complement other public and private toilets in the area including the existing free 24 hour opening public toilets at the Dolphin Quays development and also those near the lifting bridge.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “The new facilities coincide with one of the council’s main priorities, which is to make a difference to our environment. In other areas public toilets are being closed, in fact, over 10% of public toilets in the UK have gone in the last five years. Instead of closing ours we are investing £300,000 into replacing them with facilities that people feel safe using.”
David Ward, Project Manager with contractor Bradco Sissons
said:
“We are pleased that the Borough of Poole decided to work with our company to provide a new generation of public toilet facilities. We believe the design can be rolled out to other areas to provide a consistent and robust solution to the problems that councils now face on a daily basis.”
