Speed Isn't Cool

The award winning interactive play, The Buzz, has just completed a tour of secondary schools and colleges in Poole.

Performed by Box Clever who specialise in creating contemporary theatre for young people, The Buzz dramatically presents the devastating impact of speed and unsafe driving on the lives of two young people. The Buzz is the perfect way to reach a large group of young people in a fun and interactive way while teaching important issues. Each year, tutors are unanimous in their praise for this production.

Hard-hitting and entertaining, the play is a love story set in the fast lane. Gary and Sharon make a cool couple. Gary is 18 and drives his Mum's mauve mini metro and likes going fast. He knows he can handle it. Life is one long empty highway stretching into the sun………..

Lesley Hart, Road Safety Education Officer, Transportation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The evaluations asking the students for their opinion of what they have just experienced include comments such as 'speed isn't cool!’ and 'image is not everything but travelling safely is!' As 30% of Poole's Killed or Seriously Injured (KSIs) for 2003 were 17-24 year olds, we need to target this age group. By changing attitudes, we aim to change behaviour on our roads. I am pleased with the positive comments that are coming in following our recent performances."

Cllr Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: "One in five newly qualified drivers will have an accident in their first year of driving. Theatre in Education projects such as The Buzz are an effective way of getting vital road safety messages across to this vulnerable age group."
