Change to library opening hours

From 18^th April 2006, residents of Poole will be able to access Poole's three main libraries at Broadstone, Rossmore and the Central Library in the Dolphin Centre from Monday through to Saturday. The opening hours for the three libraries will be 9.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 7.00pm on Friday, and 9.00am to 3.00pm on Saturdays.

The opening hours for Branksome Library will change to 9.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Wednesday, 9.30am to 7.00pm on Fridays, and 9.30am to 1.00pm on Saturdays with Thursday remaining a closed day. The opening hours for all other libraries in the network will remain unchanged.

The changes will mean that Broadstone Library, the second busiest in the borough, will no longer be closed on Wednesdays. The small reduction in hours at Central Library and Rossmore have been made following an examination of patterns of use and a review of resources.

Kevin McErlane, Head of Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, said: "Ensuring that we deliver a quality service means that we have, on occasion, to make adjustments so that we stay within our budget. At the same time, we have to meet the diverse needs of parents with toddlers, school children, students and avid readers. Reconciling all of these elements poses a challenge.  In making these changes, a key consideration was the wish to move away from closing Broadstone on Wednesdays. Information on library usage also revealed relatively few people using these libraries at 8.30am."

Councillor Elaine Atkinson, Portfolio Holder for Community Support said: "Our library service was rated very highly in a recent government report. This adjustment in opening times will enable us to continue to deliver the same high quality service."

When the libraries are closed, a 24 hour on-line service is available for library members via the library website, where residents can access the library catalogue, reserve and renew books etc.
