26 Feb 07Ever Thought About Becoming A Councillor?
'Have you ever thought of becoming a Councillor?' That is the question Borough of Poole is asking in the run up to elections.
An information evening will be held at the Civic Centre on Thursday 15 March, at 7pm, for people interested in finding out more about the process and responsibilities involved.
Prospective candidates must be over 18 and either live, work or own/rent a property in the Borough.
Councillors are elected to represent local residents in specific 'Ward' areas, Poole has16 Wards. The role of a Councillor can be very varied and it is up to each individual how they work. Councillors have responsibilities to their Ward, to the Council and, of course, to the community.
Ward responsibilities include:
· Listening to and representing the views of residents.
· Making sure services are delivered effectively in their Ward.
· Helping individual members of the public on specific issues known as case work.
· Trying to secure extra resources for their Ward.
· Acting on behalf of all the Ward's residents, not just the ones that voted for you!
Cllr Neil Sorton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: "I have been a Councillor at Borough of Poole for over 30 years and I would highly recommend it as a worthwhile and rewarding position. I previously worked full-time alongside my council duties and found it manageable to juggle the two, however commitment to the Council is essential and it is not a role that can be undertaken lightly."
Cllr Mike Brooke, Leader of the opposition, said: "Being a Councillor demands hard work and dedication. The best Councillors are those that have a genuine desire to make a difference in Poole. It is a long-term commitment which brings with it satisfaction, knowing that you can make a real difference to the lives of Poole residents."
