2 Jun 04D-Day Commemoration On the Beach
As part of the launch of the Longest Summer Events programme on Thursday June 3, the Royal Marines will be arriving on the beach at Sandbanks as part of the 60th D-Day Commemoration.
Three landing craft from the Royal Marines base at Hamworthy will pull up onto the sands outside the Sandbanks Beach Office at 8pm.
The Marines will march up the beach to approach the civic party, including Poole Mayor Cllr Les Burden and Sheriff Cllr Lou Knight, on the promenade.
The Mayor will present a special edition Poole Pottery plate commemorating the 60th anniversary of D-Day to the NCO from the leading landing craft, Sergeant Kenny Bingham. Colonel Steve Hartnell OBE from the Marines will then return the gesture by presenting the Mayor with a Royal Marines Plaque.
The Marines will leave shortly after the exchange of gifts has been completed.
