13 Sep 06New Look For Alderney Rec
Improvement work on Alderney Recreation Ground is underway this week as part of major makeover plans for the site spearheaded by the Bourne Stream Partnership
and supported by the Borough of Poole’s Leisure Services.
Alderney is Poole’s second most densely populated area and in the last three years residents, agencies and other groups such as the Bourne Stream Partnership
have joined together to improve the quality of life in the area.
The £150,000 improvement plans will reinstate the stream through the ‘long field’ which will not only improve public enjoyment of the space but will benefit stream water quality and wildlife habitat. Other works include installing a bridge, weir and pond as part of the first phase of the proposal, with further funding being sought to introduce a footpath, seating and lighting. The stream and pond works are being funded by Wessex Water
as they are designed to help with a flooding problem at Alder Crescent.
Work will be carried out by Poole based company Jenkins Marine
, and during the first week will create a small fishing lake in the corner of the lower field as part of a partnership project with the Environment Agency
.
Roger Harrington, Chairman of the Bourne Stream Partnership
, said: “Alderney Rec is a significant and quite unique local open space but is rather underused due to past neglect and vandalism. Many of its problems stem from the fact that it’s so tucked away and not really overlooked. Through our work with the Council’s Leisure Services, local residents and other groups, we aim to create an attractive and safe environment that can be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.”
Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “It is essential that we continue to make the most of our beautiful open spaces so that people can enjoy their leisure time in safe and pleasant surroundings. We are proud to be supporting the local community with this very positive initiative and look forward to the area becoming a more attractive, varied and usable open space that residents can be proud of”.
