Second Truck Run On Vegetable Oil Hits Poole Streets

A second recycling and refuse vehicle that runs on environmentally friendly vegetable oil is working the streets of Poole - helping to keep the Borough clean, green.

Borough of Poole's Fleet Management has taken delivery of another converted refuse truck and, by pioneering the technology, is leading the way for local authorities in the United Kingdom.

First Bio-Fuel recycling vehicle launched in August 2006.

It follows the successful launch of its first bio-fuel recycling vehicle in August 2006.

The scheme has been proved so successful that Borough of Poole plans to convert a further three of its refuse vehicles over the next six months.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "We pride ourselves on our efforts to be an environmentally-friendly authority. Pure vegetable oil offers great advantages over bio-diesel for commercial vehicles. It is a cleaner, more eco-friendly fuel and has far less impact on the environment than conventional diesel fuel."

Not only is vegetable oil a cheaper fuel to buy, it is also created from a renewable source and produces lower emission levels - making it much better for the environment.

Thanks to innovative technology and the help of Regenatec link will open in new window, a company which specialises in diesel to plant oil conversions, the Borough of Poole's recycling trucks can be fuelled by processed, used vegetable oil.

The conversion means that the vehicle is started on diesel, but then automatically changes over to the bio-fuel oil after a few minutes when the engine has warmed up.
