27 Sep 06New Measures To Tackle Blue Badge Abuse
Blue Badge users in Poole are being reminded about the new measures which come into effect across the country this Friday, 29 September 2006 to tackle Blue Badge fraud.
Once the new powers come into effect, the Borough of Poole's parking attendants and police will be able to inspect blue badges as part of their other parking enforcement duties.
Any person who refuses to produce a badge for inspection without good reason could face a fine of up to £1,000.
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder said: "It is important that spaces are reserved for people with genuine need and therefore we welcome these new measures to tackle any possible abuse of the Blue Badge scheme."
The Blue Badge scheme provides a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel as drivers or passengers. The Scheme also applies to registered blind people and people with very severe upper limb disabilities who regularly drive a vehicle but cannot turn a steering wheel by hand.
Poole has one of the highest ratios of disabled parking bays to standard parking spaces in the region and the Council has recently introduced a new permit scheme for those customers who are registered disabled but do not own a car to help them access Poole's beaches.
