The Borough of Poole is Doing Its Bit to help the environment after awarding a new energy contract for the supply of environmentally friendly electricity to the Council’s larger buildings. This alone will lead to an environmental saving equivalent to 375 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Reducing the levels of CO2 emissions from Council buildings, including the Civic Centre and the Central Library, is just one of the ways the Borough of Poole has been looking to rationalise and improve the way in which its energy is procured and used. Councillor Neil Sorton, Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: "In a volatile and ever rising energy market, it’s essential to keep costs down. The new contract has been obtained at the same cost as a conventional supply and it’s exempt from the Climate Change Levy. What’s more the supply is also being sourced through a large Local Authority consortium to enable economies of scale and collective bargaining power in the energy markets. This will ensure the best possible prices are obtained for the Council’s energy requirements." The Council’s Property Services has also carried out an audit of energy use at the at the Civic Centre. The audit, fully funded by the Carbon Trust, has identified a number of recommendations for the conservation of energy including improvements to the boiler system, insulation and to weather-strip windows and doors, modifications to lighting systems and staff awareness of good housekeeping measures. Arthur Green, Head of Property Services, Borough of Poole said: "Thanks to the advice and assistance of the Council’s Corporate Procurement Team we can now work towards making all our buildings cleaner and greener places." The new electricity contract is supplied by Good Quality Combined Heat and Power Sources.
