New 20 mph Zone Outside Schools In Turlin Moor

As from Monday 24 April, the road in front of Turlin Moor Community First School and Turlin Moor Middle School will be designated as one of the first 20 mph zones in the borough.

The new zone in Turlin Moor, which sees a reduction in speed limits from 30 mph to 20 mph, will mean that over 300 school children who walk to school can cross the road in comparative safety. The scheme will also benefit people wanting to access the local shops and post office.

Almost all of the children at Turlin Moor Community First School, (201 out of 220), and around half of the children at Turlin Moor Middle School (130 out of 210) have walked to school recently. The new speed zone will mean they can walk in a safer zone than before as well as help reduce pollution as the cars drive more slowly.

Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy said: ‘Whilst Poole has a good road safety record overall we continue to look at ways of making our roads even safer. Children can’t judge the speed of cars even at 20mph so having these signs will help them feel safer on their way to school and provide peace of mind for their parents. We look forward to rolling out these new zones outside all schools in the borough over the next couple of years’.

Pupils at both schools designed the road signs telling drivers to drive at 20 mph in front of their schools and the Mayor is officially opening the special school zone on 24 April.
