13 Oct 05Everybody Needs Good Neighbours
2CR FM’s Graham Mack & Richie presented the 2005 Good Neighbour Awards at the Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole on Tuesday 18 October.
Residents of Poole nominated their neighbours for the competition, organised by the five major social housing landlords and the Poole Safe Together Partnership, to find the star at the heart of their neighbourhood.
The social landlords involved were Poole Housing Partnership (PHP), Knightstone, Raglan, Swaythling and Western Challenge.
First prize winner is Mr D Hall of Dale Close (PHP) who wins £100. Mrs Richards of Thorncombe Road (Knightstone) takes the second prize of £75 and Mrs Smith of Millfield (PHP) wins the third prize of £50.
All the winners were nominated for outstanding contributions to their neighbours and community. First prize winner, PHP tenant, Dennis Hall, was nominated for this award by his neighbour, Mrs Allen, as he is always on hand to help-out with jobs that need doing. Mrs Allen said: “Den is the mainstay of our community, we don’t know what we’d do without him, he definitely deserves to win this!”
Knightstone tenant, Deborah Richards, who took second place, was nominated by her neighbour Julie Gillingham, who said: “As well as looking after her own husband who is unwell, Deborah also looks out for other people in the neighbourhood should they need anything. As a registered disabled person myself, she is always on hand if I need anything and will often pick things up from the shops for me.”
Third prize winner Christine Smith was nominated by her neighbour Mrs Missin for her dedication to her community. Mrs Missin said of her neighbour: “Once a fortnight she cooks a lunch for all the other residents to enjoy. She organizes outings and garden parties for us all, and does all the cooking. She runs raffles for us and will even do our shopping if we are sick. She is a gem.”
The prize winners were presented with their cheques and certificates by 2CR FM’s Graham Mack and Richie. Their nominators also received a certificate of commendations and a bunch of flowers each.
Unfortunately, Mrs Allen was unable to attend the awards due to ill-health, so her commendation certificate and flowers were collected by a mutual friend, Mrs Coleman, on her behalf.
Jo Mare, Estates Manager, Poole Housing Partnership, said: “This is the first competition of its kind in the area and it gives the unsung heroes of communities across Poole the opportunity to receive the recognition they deserve.
“Working together, Poole’s social landlords decided to reward good neighbours, who make the lives of those around them so much better. With so much news now focused on anti-social behaviour and the few who make it unpleasant for the many, this is a way of putting the spotlight back on the good people in our communities.”
