Award Success for Poole Safe

The Poole Safe link will open in new window Scheme, which sees the Borough of Poole and Poole Police link will open in new window working in close partnership with local licensees, has won a national award and been short listed in the finals for a further two awards.

Poole Safe was awarded ‘Best Partnership’ by the Responsible Drinks Retailing (RDR) Awards, which recognises authorities, agencies and groups who lead the way in further enhancing their communities. Poole Safe won the award for initiatives developed including professional training for staff, taxi marshals, new Pub Watch groups, safer drinking programmes and the Safe and Sound Awards to accredit well run venues.

The 2006 Responsible Drinks Retailing Award for ‘Best Partnership’ is a national award operated by William Reed Publishers, who produce the principle national trade magazines for the licensed trade.  The award ceremony, held at the Park Lane Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday 21 November 2006, was attended by leading figures within the industry.  Other shortlisted partnerships in this category included Derby City Centre and the City of London.

The two national awards Poole Safe has been short listed for are:

· BII NITA link will open in new window Awards, for the ‘Social Responsibilities’ Award
· Springboard Awards for Excellence link will open in new window, for the ‘Corporate Citizenship’ Award

BII is the professional body for the licensed retail sector, the NITA awards are the prestigious national training awards run by the BII which recognise the best training in the licensed retail sector.

The BII NITA link will open in new window 2006 Award for ‘Social Responsibilities’ recognises organisations that have developed the best course to address social responsibility issues facing licensees and staff. Poole Safe, in conjunction with a local training company, offers professional training courses accredited by the British Institute of Innkeepers.  The NITA award nomination is in recognition of a course the team developed aimed at the licensed trade, giving direct training for bar staff operating on the front line and conflict management training. Poole Safe has also obtained funding to subsidise the course.

The Springboard Awards for Excellence link will open in new window cover Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism.
The Springboard Award for ‘Corporate Citizenship’ recognises real commitment to social responsibility – both at a strategic and operational level. The award is looking for evidence of effective initiatives supporting a holistic approach to all aspects of social responsibility.

Winners of the BII NITA and Springboard awards will be announced in the next three weeks, with Poole Safe hoping for further success.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The award and nominations are in recognition for all the hard work put into Poole Safe by officers from the Borough of Poole’s Environmental & Consumer Protection and Poole Police, and the commitment the local authority and Police have made to the residents of Poole and local businesses .”

Acting Sergeant Chris Ingram, Poole Police, said:  “Licensees across Poole work hard to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for customers and staff.  The award that was won and the other nominations are testaments to the partnership between licensees, local authority and Police and further highlight Poole as a great place to enjoy a safe night out.”
