The cars provide Councillors and Officers with an efficient and environmentally friendly travel solution by enabling them to book the cars to travel to meetings in the area. John Dermody, Head of Adult Social Services who is one of the heaviest users of the cars, clocked the final miles on his way back from a meeting in Poole. Steve Bendall, IBO Intercontinental Middleweight Champion and a world traveller himself, was at the Civic Centre to greet John and present him with a World Atlas today to mark the occasion. John said, ‘Having the Smart cars as a travel option to get to meetings is great. I can just leave my car at home and take a 20 minute bus journey to work - so one less car on the road and no parking problems when I get there!’ Steve Bendall, said: ‘As a resident of Poole I have seen these cars on a number of occasions zipping around the area. They certainly are an innovative way to promote the Council’s website and for the four of them to have been around the world shows just how well used they are.’ Councillor Neil Sorton, said: ‘These cars have been a real hit with Councillors and Officers travelling to their meetings and have proved to be a great way of promoting our website
In less than 18 months Poole Council’s four Smart Pool cars have travelled around the world, totting up a grand total of 24,902 miles between them.
With a fresh new site launched a few months ago, boroughofpoole.com continues to grow with more and more people turning to pay, report and apply for Council services online.
