Poole Blooms Again!

Poole in Bloom

Everything’s coming up roses in Poole this summer as Southern England in Bloom, supported by Tourism South East announced Poole as the winner of its City Category for populations of 100,000 to 200,000.

Poole hosted the Southern England in Bloom judges on Friday 18th July when they were shown round Broadstone, Canford Heath, Mitchell House Day Centre, Sandbanks, Chestnut Nursery and Poole town centre. The judges were looking for specific criteria such as the quality of floral display in parks and public areas, shop frontages, residential gardens, nature conservation, cleanliness and lack of litter. A large emphasis this year was placed on community involvement and with support from residents, businesses and groups such as Broadstone in Bloom and Hamworthy in Bloom they certainly did the town proud.

Cllr Jonathan Pethen, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment, said "The initiatives used in Poole such as the Pride in Poole awards have been particularly successful in helping to reduce litter and keeping Poole a beautiful place! With new enforcement legislation now in practice, we are able to educate and raise awareness, in all sectors of the community to the negative impact on the environment caused by littering and flytipping. This has been recognised by receiving this prestigious award."

As well as the floral displays on show throughout the town the Poole in Bloom committee works hard to promote awareness of the campaign amongst the residents of Poole. This is achieved through the successful Schools Colouring Competition and the ever popular Garden of the Year competition. Each year the winners of these competitions are invited to a special presentation at Upton House, Upton Country Park, which this year will be on 6th October 2003.

Poole was also given special awards for: Mitchell House for Best New Landscape; Pride in Poole Awards for Local Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development; and a Southern England in Bloom medal for continued support was awarded to Rachel Allenby of Scaplens Court for her dedication and support to this garden.

The Poole in Bloom committee is always on the look out for willing volunteers to get involved. So, if you have the time and energy please call Susan Lever, Business Development Officer on 01202 261343 or e-mail s.lever@poole.gov.uk for further information.
