27 Oct 06Poole Bridge Closure - Alternative Services
Poole lifting bridge will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 23.45 on Friday 20th October until 05.30 on Monday 30th October and to minimise disruption following this temporary closure the Borough of Poole will be providing a free passenger ferry service between Saturday 21 October until Sunday 29 October inclusive.
The necessary maintenance works include resurfacing the whole of the Bridge and the carriageway on Blandford Road from Shapwick Road to Bridge Approach, replacing the concrete deck infill on the Bridge Track and Lifting Spans and realigning and resurfacing the junction between the Bridge, West Quay Road, West Street and The Quay.
Starting on Saturday 21 October the passenger ferry will operate daily between the Ferry Road steps and the Custom House steps from 06.00 hours to 23.00 hours, until Sunday 29 October (inclusive). The ferry will run at approximately 15 minute intervals and cyclists are welcome to use this service also.
In addition, Wilts and Dorset
have made arrangements for some bus services to be rescheduled during the closure as follows:
· Service 9 (Daytime) Poole > Hamworthy > Turlin Moor
This service will operate on a revised route from Poole Bus Station via Holes Bay Road to Upton Crossroads, continuing via Turlin Moor and Lakeside to terminate at the Potters Arms. This service will operate every 30 minutes in the daytime between approximately 6am and 6.30pm.
· Service 9 (Evening) Poole > Hamworthy > Turlin Moor
The evening services will be provided by an extended Service 8. This will operate hourly between 7pm and 11pm from Poole Bus Station via Wimborne Road, Creekmoor, Upton Crossroads, Moorland Way, Sandy Lane, Turlin Moor and Lakeside, to terminate at the Potters Arms.
· Services 142, 143 and X8 (Evening)
These evening journeys will operate via their daytime routes along Holes Bay Road and will not serve Hamworthy.
· Service 152 (Daytime) Sandbanks > Poole > Rockley Park
This service will operate between Sandbanks and Poole Bus Station only. Unfortunately it is not possible to serve Rockley Park during the Bridge closure period.
In addition there will be no bus services (apart from RouteONE ) from the stops at Lagland Street and Old Orchard during the closure period.
Access to and from The Quay will be maintained as much as possible during the bridge closure, although there may be a short overnight period of restriction when the surfacing work is carried out.
All scheduled bridge lifts will continue to take place, but will only be single span throughout the closure period. The Council will endeavour to provide single span commercially requested lifts where possible.
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation said: "Obviously we are well aware of the impact that this bridge closure will have, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however these works are absolutely essential in ensuring the longevity of the bridge. We are pleased to be able to provide the ferry service which should help enormously with minimising any disruption."
