Poole Youth Forum Make a Trip to Holland

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, young people from Poole are accompanying Operation Market Garden veteran, Ted Thurston, to learn about the Second World War in Holland this month,

As part of the trip the Dorset Twinning Association has arranged for young people to visit to the Anne Frank house, meet young people from a local Dutch school, and lay two commemorative wreaths. Tony Watts from the DTA, said: "The trip will give young people the opportunity to visit a country which historically has important friendly links with England. It will be an occasion to honour the English troops and Dutch people who took part in the operation."

The trip was arranged to develop the previous work of Poole Youth Forum, who organised a trip to Normandy in June last year to celebrate the liberation of the French and the anniversary of the D-day landings.

Accompanying them will be the Mayor and Mayoress of Poole, Cllr Les Burden and his wife Maryrose. It is hoped that the cultural experience in Holland will help young people to understand the horrors of war.

Veteran Ted Thurston, said: "Having worked with young people in preparation of this project it is clear that they don’t really know what happened. The trip will give good insight into the battle and after they’ll appreciate a lot more what veterans did."

The trip which takes place from March 29 to April 2, is being funded by a Big Lottery Fund grant.
