Public Consultation begins on Streetscape Design

Consultation is underway on the design and appearance of the streets and public spaces to be revamped as part of the Full Sail Ahead and Twin Sails Regeneration project. Streetscape is how Poole’s new streets, quaysides and public places will integrate with Poole’s existing character.

The Council and their design consultants B+BUK:smallGLOBAL have already carried out an initial consultation with stakeholders and residents on how the new places of Poole should look when the West Quay Road and Lower Hamworthy areas are regenerated. From this consultation a Streetscape Design Guidance Manual has been put together and is going out for consultation from 4 May until 16 June 2004.

Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: "The views of the residents are vital if we are to ensure that a true and accurate picture of how the people of Poole would like to shape the future of their town. Making sure we give the best to the Borough and making sure that our residents are happy is key to the regeneration of Poole."

The people and businesses of Poole will be able to view the Streetscape Design Guidance Manual on the Council’s web site boroughofpoole.com/fullsailahead and a free leaflet is available, summarising the principles and themes of the scheme.

John Biggs, Urban Design Team Leader, Planning Design and Control Services, Borough of Poole, said: "It is important that as many residents as possible view the current document as any amendments to the original manual will then be adopted as a Supplementary Planning Guidance to the Local Plan, First Alteration. This will then form the basis of the Council’s guide for developers and their designers."

He added: "We hope that as many people as possible will view the proposals and let us know what they think of the ideas and vision of the future presented the good points, bad points and any other ideas that you might have. The more public support we receive for specific ideas, the more likely we are to see them in reality."

The are several ways of seeing the manual:-

• A CD copy and paper copies will be available at all Libraries in the Borough. A paper copy can also be viewed a the Civic Centre in Planning, Design and Control Services, \n

• There will be a short presentation at the meeting of the ‘Hamworthy Lunch’ on 5 May at Turlin Moor Middle School, \n
