4 Aug 04New Weapon in the Fight Against Goose Droppings
The Borough of Poole has brought in a new weapon in the fight to rid Poole Park of goose droppings.
Leisure Services, working with their contractor Wreford Landscapes, have successfully trialed an innovative machine called the "Amazon" to tackle the nuisance. The machine lightly scarifies the grass surface and in doing so lifts the droppings which can then be disposed of. It has been in operation for a few days now and is proving to be a huge success.
Councillor Peter Adams, Chairman of the Environment Overview Group, Borough of Poole, said: "The Canada Geese and ducks in the park have long been an attraction for families visiting the park. However goose droppings are a major headache and the nuisance can spoil the enjoyment of visitors. This has lead to the council exploring a number of innovative ways to tackle the issue and the Amazon scarifier is proving to be an effective weapon in the fight to eradicate the unsightly mess."
The nuisance that goose droppings cause in Poole Park is well known to users of the Park. Visitors are often deterred from using areas of grass around the park for fear of sitting on the mess.
Matti Raudsepp, Open Spaces Manager, Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The Amazon does not reduce the number of Canada Geese in Poole Park, but it allows us to deal more effectively with the consequences of their visits. We are delighted with effect the machine is having so far and we hope that visitors will be too."
