2 Nov 06Turlin Moor Make a Difference Day
To support the national 'Make a Difference Day'
campaign, Poole residents were invited to join in with this year's campaign to help transform the recreational area at Turlin Moor Youth Centre on Saturday 21 October between 10am and 2pm.
Led by the Community Service Volunteers (CSV),
'Make a Difference Day' is the UK's largest day of volunteering. Members of the public were joined by volunteers from the Borough of Poole's Environmental & Consumer Protection Services and Leisure Services, Dorset Fire & Rescue Service
, St Gabriel's Church, Turlin Moor Action Group, Dorset Wildlife Trust
, and the youth centre to participate in a range of activities including creating a new community wildlife garden at the rear of the youth centre, bulb planting and a tidy up of the area including a litter pick. Local residents were also able to dispose of bulky household waste with a free removal service.
The wildlife garden had lots of attention with the distribution of a large pile of wood chip being placed around the pond, and a general clear-up.

The bulb planting took place in the wildlife garden, the woodland area at the rear of the Youth Centre and on a large grass verge on Turlin Road. Plowmans Garden Nursery very kindly donated bulbs. Approximately 3,000 daffodils should be in bloom next spring as a result of the planting that took place on the day.
Local residents filled six skips with bulky household items. Each skip contained specific types of waste for easy/efficient disposal, e.g. metal, general household, green, wood, etc.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said; "The day was deemed as a huge success. Everyone who attended enjoyed the day and there was a real sense of community sprit, and a great sense of achievement from people who gave up their time to give something back to their area to really 'Make a Difference'. I think it is apparent that there is a real effort taking place to greatly enhance this area with this campaign, and also the impending bid to the National Lottery's 'People's Millions' which, if successful, will provide funds for an ambitious community project."
