Love Thy Neighbour?

On Valentine’s Day, Mayor & Mayoress of Poole, Cllr Lou Knight & Mrs Angela Knight, will present the 2006 Good Neighbour Awards at the Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole.

Residents across Poole nominated their neighbours for the competition, organised by the five major social housing landlords and the Poole Safe Together Partnership, to find the star at the heart of their neighbourhood.

The social landlords involved were Poole Housing Partnership link will open in new window(PHP), Knightstone, Raglan, Swaythling and Western Challenge.

First prize winner is Mrs Ethel Wareham (PHP) who wins £100.  Mrs Betty Peart (PHP) takes the second prize of £75 and Mrs Grace Taylor (Swaythling) wins the third prize of £50.

All the winners were nominated for outstanding contributions to their neighbours and community.  First prize winner, Ethel, was nominated by her neighbour, John Waters. He said, “She’s our Mother Theresa.  She visits the elderly and sick at home and in hospital, as well as helping out with bingo and coffee mornings at the social club.  She has raised nine children and it’s amazing the energy she musters.  She thoroughly deserves this recognition for her kindness.”

Betty Peart, who took second place, was nominated by her housebound neighbour Peggy Cafe, who said: “She helps everybody she can.  She comes in 2-3 times a day to check on me, does my cooking, shopping and cleaning and never grumbles.”

Third prize winner, Grace Taylor, was nominated by her neighbour David Tearall for her dedication to her community.  Mr Tearall said of his neighbour, “Grace is a very caring person.  As Secretary of the Resident’s Committee she has arranged a small community area with a bench table, were residents can go to sit and relax.  She has personally provided plants for the area and works hard to keep it clean and tidy for everyone’s enjoyment.”

The prize winners will be presented with their cheques and certificates by Mayor Cllr Lou Knight.  Their nominators will also received a certificate of commendation.
