30 Apr 04New Poole Street Market on Target for Summer
Poole Town Centre Management and the Borough of Poole have identified UK market leaders Ensors, as the preferred tenderer subject to contract to run the new general street market due to start this summer in the town.
Ensors, who have been involved in market management for over 200 years, already run the hugely successful markets at Wimborne, Dorchester, Weymouth and Swanage.
Brendon George of Ensors said his firm was delighted to have been selected as the main tenderer to run the new Poole Street Market and was confident the market would prove to be very successful and a real asset to the town.
He said: "It is our intention to create a varied and interesting market which will bring colour and character to the High Street. Existing retailers will be encouraged to become part of the new market, which we hope would attract more of the local population and tourists to come to Poole on market day."
The new Poole Market was proposed after a review of other markets in Dorset, Devon and Hampshire found they could become a major attraction in a town of Poole's size. A recent survey also showed that was strong support for a regular weekly street market in Poole and that Poole could benefit from once again establishing itself as a market town.
The new market day will be every Thursday in Poole High Street starting in the early summer.
Town Centre Manager
Helen Crawford said: "We have carried out a very detailed tender process and are looking forward to discussing the details with Ensors to bring the market into Poole. We have introduced specialist markets at seasonal times and these have brought a much-needed vibrancy to the High Street. We are confident that with Ensors' expertise and local knowledge, we can bring in a market that benefits our retailers within the middle section of the High Street."
Cllr Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: "A new and vibrant market will bring an enormous boost to our town centre trade and provide a weekly focal point for both residents and visitors to the town. It will provide an added attraction in the town which is going through great change and I am delighted Poole will once again be known as a market town."
