Poole Basks in Fourth Blue Flag Glory

Once again another Poole beach is basking in the glory of its first Blue Flag Award.

In addition to Sandbanks’s record-breaking 18th Blue Flag, this year has seen Canford Cliffs Beach receive the same acclaimed standard after being rated first class. Shore Road and Branksome Chine beaches in Poole are also celebrating after receiving their awards once again. 

Clive Smith, Head of Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: “I'm delighted that we are raising our standards even further by achieving Poole's fourth Blue Flag beach as well as maintaining our high standards on the existing three.”

The Blue Flag Awards for beaches are given annually by ENCAMS and are only valid for one year.  It is an international recognition for well managed beaches which have good bathing water quality, regular beach cleaning, provision of lifesaving equipment and first aid, refreshments, suitable toilet facilities and a commitment to the environment.

To achieve a Blue Flag Award for Canford Cliffs, the Borough of Poole’s Leisure Services had to create a new Beach office with first-aid facilities. In addition, general maintenance work was carried out on the pavilion. The beach also received its first UK Seaside Award in April this year.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: “I am delighted that Canford Cliffs Beach has received its first Blue Flag Award. It reflects all the hard work and team effort that has gone into improving the beach. We are incredibly proud of our beaches in Poole and this award demonstrates that we are still clearly leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.”

With hundreds of thousands of visitors coming to Poole every year there’s plenty to do. As well as enjoying the clean beaches and water, visitors can enjoy the 18-hole crazy golf course and 18-hole putting green, beach massage by qualified staff, hair braiding and henna tattoos. In addition Summer Breeze…on the Beach with the popular fireworks display is being held every Thursday evening throughout August at Shore Road.
