With the public inquiry beginning later this month, Dorset Business has given its wholehearted support to the Borough of Poole's application for a second harbour crossing.
Chief Executive of Dorset Business, Peter Scott, declared that a large majority of local businesses were convinced the bridge is needed to ensure there is a reliable transport system in Poole and to the port, and recognise it would bring huge leisure and employment opportunities to the town.
"Poole needs a second crossing to facilitate unhindered access between the communities of Hamworthy and Poole, and to provide a reliable transport connection to the Port of Poole, a Trans European Network Port. Dorset Business acknowledges that a very considerable amount of time and effort has been expended by the Council in delivering this project. The proposed bridge appears to me to represent an outcome which balances the often competing imperatives of upgrading transportation links, facilitating access to mixed-use (including employment) land, enhancing prospects for the business community, improving quality of life and minimising the impact on the environment."
Cllr Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: "We are delighted to have the full support of our business community who we have consulted at every stage of the process to deliver a second harbour crossing in the town. The Twin Sails Bridge will bring £1billion of investment to Poole over the next few years and create a huge number of opportunities for local people and businesses alike."
The Public Inquiry into Poole's Twin Sails Bridge begins on September 27 in the Civic Centre. It is expected to last up to four weeks and will hear evidence from objectors and supporters to the Council's application to build and operate a second harbour crossing.
Dorset Business is the Chamber of Commerce and Industry with a large membership and represents a wide number of business interests across the county.
