A vacant piece of land in Poole is to be used to provide a unique development of over 90 new homes, which will showcase the latest in sustainable construction and design.
The plot of land, behind the Dolphin Swimming Pool, is to be developed by Western Challenge Housing Association in partnership with the Borough of Poole. All materials used are to meet strict rules and will be ozone and ecologically friendly.
Councillor Bill Wretham, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing, Borough of Poole, said: "This development is an example of the way in which the needs and aspirations of Poole can be met. I am pleased to see such forward thinking plans in place for the future of our town, which will bring many benefits to local people."
The development will:
- be an exemplar of good urban design \n
- provide high quality rented and low cost home ownership for Poole people, including key worker accommodation \n
- address security and safety for people in their homes \n
- have the highest specification for energy efficiency and will be healthy warm homes \n
- offer ‘live-work’ opportunities so Poole people can enhance their skills \n
- be rooted in the local community and be seen as a catalyst for activating community participation \n
These objectives fit in with those of the Poole Partnership, a group of representatives from all sectors – public, private, business, voluntary and community, set up to deliver Poole’s Community Strategy.
Ken Pottle, Chair of the Poole Partnership, said: "The Poole Partnership feels that this exciting project captures the needs and aspirations of Poole. We will work closely with Western Challenge Housing Association to maximise this important development."
Western Challenge aim to submit a planning application for this ground-breaking scheme before Christmas. The whole development will take over 18 months to complete and it is hoped that a start on site will be made early in the New Year.
Jitinder Takhar, Group Business Development Director, Western Challenge, said: "We are delighted to be working on this unique development. The opportunities exist to make this the benchmark against which all other development will be measured in Poole and beyond. We are sure this will provide a truly sustainable community."
Notes:
Poole Partnership is made up of many organisations aiming to achieve long-term improvements to the quality of life of Poole people. It is the first time such a wide range of partners has worked together for the benefit of Poole.
The Partnership exists to actively involve local people and organisations in shaping the future of their town. It believes that working together and pooling ideas and resources are vital to ensure the Vision for Poole is delivered.
