8 Aug 06New Library Card For Children
Children visiting libraries in Poole can now have a new Children’s Library Card, thanks to a winning design by Emma Hockey, aged 11.
The design was chosen following a competition throughout Poole asking children to design a new library card for children. Over 200 designs were received including entries from Branksome Heath Middle School, Baden Powell and St Peter’s School with a shortlist of six chosen.
Children were then given the opportunity to vote for their favourite design via an online voting form resulting in nearly 450 votes. The winning card was officially launched on Saturday 5th August, with the prizes of arts materials and book vouchers being awarded by Ceri Worman, author of the ‘Secret Life of Jamie B’ series.
Julie Musselwhite, Children’s Services Librarian for Poole Libraries said: “This was a great initiative to encourage children’s passion about books and involvement with local libraries. The standard of entries received for the library card was exceptionally high but Emma’s design with a child on a globe surrounded by books really encapsulates a positive message that reading opens up your world and your imagination. Well done Emma!”
Children can get the new library card from libraries across Poole from 5th August. Joining local libraries is free and children can join from any age, but proof of address from a parent or guardian is required. Children can take up to 10 books or spoken word stories on CD or tape.
