Poole's Success At Keeping The Promenade Safe

Borough of Poole has brought four successful prosecutions against people for cycling on the promenade – reaffirming its commitment to keep Poole’s beaches safe for everyone.

The incidents all occurred during the summer period, when a by-law restricting cycling on the promenade is in place. Two of the incidents were concluded with successful prosecutions in November 2006 and were the first of their kind for the Borough of Poole. They were followed by a further two prosecutions in January 2007.

In all four cases, the individuals involved were each fined £20 and ordered to pay court costs of £50.

The promenade, which runs between Shore Road and the Borough boundary, is popular with residents and tourists. Cycling restrictions are in place in this area between 10am and 7pm from mid-June to mid-September.

The by-law is enforced by the Borough of Poole’s Beach Rangers who ask cyclists to dismount as they enter the promenade and inform them of the restrictions. Beach Rangers are positioned further along the promenade to take further action if individuals continue to cycle. Signs are also clearly displayed in the area to promote the restrictions.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, including Leisure, said: “Poole’s beaches are our greatest asset and it is our priority to ensure the promenade is a safe environment for people to enjoy. Restrictions are in place during the summer months as the promenade is narrow in places. With the beach busy until 7pm at this time of year we have a duty to prevent dangerous collisions between cyclists and other beach users.

“Borough of Poole encourages healthy living and supports cycling in non-restricted areas or on designated cycle lanes. We hope cyclists understand why beach restrictions are in place and ask that they respect them so the promenade can be enjoyed safely by residents and visitors.”

Cyclists are reminded that the by-law restricting cycling on the promenade during the summer will be enforced again this year.
