Free Courses to Help You Look After Someone at Home

If you live in Poole or care for someone who lives in Poole you can now attend a free course to help you.

There are 2 courses, which start in September and take just a few hours each week. One course takes place during the evening and the other during in the day time.

The courses especially designed to help those who care for someone who is disabled, elderly or frail. Topics covered include:

  • How to assist someone who needs help to move around \n
  • First aid \n
  • Home safety \n
  • What benefits the carer and cared for person might be entitled to \n
  • How to get help from your doctor and Social Services \n
  • How to manage your own stress and some of the everyday difficulties of caring

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Community Support Portfolio Holder, said: “These courses are proving very popular with the 1 in 8 people who look after someone at home.  As well as giving hints and tips to help carers cope, courses offer the opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation and ask questions of professionals in a relaxed and informal setting.”

The courses are very practical, there is no homework or exams and people of any age are welcome, provided they are involved in caring for someone on an informal basis.

Anyone who would like to book a place on a course should contact Val Mitchell,  Carers Development Officer, 01202 261174 for more details. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis. If you need someone to care for the person that you look after while you attend it may be possible to help you arrange this.
