European Election 2004

In June millions of people across Europe will be heading to the polls to vote for their future MEPs.

For elections to the European Parliament Britain is split into 12 regions, each with a regional returning officer. Poole falls into the South West region which also includes Gibraltar after the people of Gibraltar asked to be part of the South West region of Britain following a case in the European Court which held that they should have the right to vote in European Elections.

The South West region will return seven MEPs to the European Parliament.

Nominations have now closed to stand as a party/candidate in the Election.

The ballot paper for the South West region will contain eight parties and 55 candidates.

Paul Morris, Returning Officer for the Borough of Poole, has been appointed the Regional Returning Officer for the South West Region. It means Poole will be the hub of the South West Region for the purposes of the election.

On June 10 the people of Poole and 45 other Local Authorities which make up the South West region will cast their votes between 7am and 10pm. The votes will be verified in each area immediately after the polls close and kept secure. The actual count will not be done until the evening of June 13 when voting finishes in the rest of Europe.

Results for each authority will be announced at 9pm with the results for the whole region being fed into and calculated at Poole Civic Centre where the allocation of seats is expected around 10pm depending upon re-counts.
