24 Jun 02Poole Local Plan
A meeting will be held on 1st July at the Civic Centre, Poole, to outline the procedure for the forthcoming Inquiry into changes to the Poole Local Plan.
Open to interested parties and those with objections to the changes, this meeting will prepare people for the Local Public Inquiry which starts in October 2002 and will consider outstanding objections to the Plan.
As part of a formal process laid down by the Government, all Councils must produce a Local Plan which sets out policies and proposals for the development of land in the local area.
Poole’s Local Plan, which sets out how land will be used in the town, was formally adopted in August 1998. In order to keep the Plan up to date, Councils must regularly review and update them. This is known as an ‘alteration’.
Alterations include:
- Transportation - More emphasis on cycling, walking and public transport. Better provision for rail freight and allocation of park and ride sites.
- Housing - Locating housing to reduce the need to travel by car, using brownfield sites where possible and seeking quality in housing and urban design.
- Employment - Identifying existing and future employment areas, provision for small businesses and requirements for Green Transport plans for new office developments.
- Central Area - Creating a focus of activity and development in and around the town centre with better access for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. Making the best use of land for the new Poole Bridge proposals.
Cllr Williams, Executive Portfolio Holder for Environment & Regeneration, said: "It is important that local people are fully involved and aware of issues surrounding the development of our town. The Local Plan helps to protect our environment and plan for the homes we need for the future. With pressure on land it’s a difficult balance and we need to get it right for everyone’s future. This statutory process will ensure that the correct guidelines and plans are put in place. I look forward to a prosperous future for Poole and its residents."
Sylvia Jones, Programme Officer, said: "The meeting is intended to help objectors to the plan and other interested parties prepare for the Inquiry. The Inspector will outline how the Inquiry will be conducted and the procedures to be followed. Although the meeting is intended for people with objections to the plan, anyone is welcome to attend and observe."
Poole’s Local Plan and the Local Alteration can be studied at any of the Borough’s 10 public libraries, including Westbourne, or at the Civic Centre Offices 2nd floor planning reception.
