7 Sep 05Proposal to Redevelop Quay Thistle Site Refused
The Borough of Poole’s Cabinet decided at a meeting last night that it would not support current proposals to redevelop the Quay Thistle Hotel site.
The Council owns the majority of the site which has a covenant restricting the development of the site to hotel usage. The authority had been approached by Poole Hotels Ltd, the current lessee of the Quay Thistle Hotel site, with regard to the possibility of varying the existing lease arrangements.
Poole Hotels Ltd have proposed a complete redevelopment of the site. There would be a new hotel on the adjacent part of the site owned by Poole Hotels Ltd and the current hotel would be demolished and the land redeveloped, mostly for residential use with some retail and car parking.
Council Leader Cllr Brian Leverett said: “After careful consideration of the options the Cabinet felt that it would not be in the best interests of the town as a whole if they allowed this important site, which the Council largely owns, to be developed in this way. The Cabinet want to retain the extra certainty, given by the covenant, of keeping a hotel and they also feel that they should not allow publicly owned land to be developed without greater provision of community facilities.”
The Quay Thistle Site which Poole Hotels Ltd wish to redevelop covers the area currently occupied by the Quay Thistle Hotel on Poole Quay and adjacent undeveloped land.
The Council owns approximately 65 per cent of the site and Poole Hotels Ltd the remainder.
Poole Hotels Ltd’s proposals for the whole site include 252 flats, a 116 room hotel, 10,000sq ft commercial/retail use and 350 car parking spaces.
