New streetlights have recently been installed by the Borough of Poole on a stretch of the beach promenade between Shore Road and Flaghead Chine. The £100,000 art deco style lighting scheme features environmentally friendly lamps that give off minimal light pollution. The aim is to improve safety for beach users in the evenings and reduce incidents of vandalism. Funding for the lights has been met from developers’ contributions and Crime and Disorder Partnership funds from the Home Office. It is hoped that further money can be secured in the future to extend the scheme towards Branksome Dene Chine and the boundary with Bournemouth. Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: “The lights are a really attractive design which give off a strikingly blue effect as we were after a more modern image for Poole’s beaches. However the most important thing is that we take public safety very seriously in Poole and lighting will provide additional security to anyone visiting the beach in the evenings.” Amanda Bombardiere, Community Safety Officer, Housing and Community Services, Borough of Poole, said: “It is intended the lighting will create a safer environment on the promenade after dark, and reduce the incidents of anti-social behaviour and vandalism to beach huts that occur on occasions.”
