12 Jan 07Refurbishment Complete On Poole Toilets

The new toilets on Chapel Lane have been officially opened today, 12 January 2007, by the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt.
These toilets are the first to be re-built as part of a large investment in a refurbishment programme of public conveniences across the Borough.
The first four toilets to be refurbished are in areas that previous older buildings have attracted anti-social behaviour, which has caused increasing maintenance costs and public concern.
Open 24 hours a day, the toilets will have direct access doors to the street and feature improved family and disabled facilities.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “Public toilets in the Borough have been a target for vandalism and misuse in the past, but the new Chapel Lane facility reduces the need for costly repairs and preventative measures against vandalism, as well as providing a facility which is less intimidating for people to use. There is also a positive environmental impact with the efficient use of electricity and water.”
Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt said: “It was a delight to be able to open such a useful convenience for the people of Poole. I know that the new facility will be much appreciated and it's fresh modern design will make the call of nature a truly pleasant experience. Congratulations to all concerned in ensuring that the comfort of our residents is paramount. I am positive that the new loos will be a great asset to the town.”
The new Chapel Lane toilets will include:
- Family-friendly facilities for men and women including baby changing areas
- Improved disabled facilities, including the latest Disability Discrimination Act
compliant facilities: emergency contact switches and different coloured and textured equipment. - Sensored taps and hand dryers
- Efficient use of electricity and water
- Direct access doors to the street
- 24-hour opening times
The new toilets also feature an anti-vandal design to prevent anti-social behaviour, including vandal-resistant fittings with no exposed pipework or cabling.
David Ward, Project Manager with contractor Bradco Sissons
said: “We are pleased that the Borough of Poole decided to work with our company to provide a new generation of public toilet facilities. We believe the design can be rolled out to other areas to provide a consistent and robust solution to the problems that councils now face on a daily basis.”
The Chapel Lane toilets are part of a larger refurbishment programme of public toilets which will see a new design of facilities in areas of Poole, starting at Quay Visitors Car Park, Sea View and Poole Road.
These new toilets supplement the other four town centre toilets which include two with 24 hour free access.
